Beatrice A. Quaini

Prose, What Was I Thinking About

The sign at the mall reads “The coffee of your dreams,” and below it, “Come try the coffee
machine that reads your mind!”

The employee says, “It can make the exact cup you are thinking about. It uses face
recognition and includes every variation of milk and coffee.”
Pointing at the black machine, he adds, “You only need to look at the screen,” so I do.

Puzzled, I look at the cup I receive: the strong, unsweetened espresso that I used to hate.
I hadn’t realized I still remembered so well the way he used to take his morning coffee.
